Windows recently corrupted, so I had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall it. I booted up from a floppy that identified the CD drive as the E drive. I subsequently changed this to D, but whenever Windows searches for a file it still looks for E. How can I make it look for the D drive?
If you haven't yet installed any CD-based programs it would be easier to change the CD drive back to E. There's no law that says a CD drive has to be D, and if you should decide to install a second hard disk it will insist on taking the letter D for itself anyway.
However, you can change the location where Windows looks for its files using the Registry Editor. Launch the Registry Editor and then open these Registry folders in turn: Hkey_Local_Machine, Software, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Setup. Select the Setup folder then, in the righthand pane, double-click the item named Source Path. You can then change the path from E to D. Before you edit the Registry see tip Back up the Registry.
